The Contract for Building the Hope Theatre, 1613; index. First American Edition, 1954. "Now that the old theatre has been so long demolished, it turns out that there are very few historical buildings of which we would so much wish to have had a relaible record. The problem of reconstructing it has become a fascinating excercise in the field of literary conjecture, the more especially since it is probable that the exact truth about it can never now be known, and that beyond the point where evidence leaves off there is some need, and considerable stimulus, for the imagination. In this book I have tried to strike a proper and declared balance between the facts and my own interpretation of them. No one, I think, is justified in offering a reconstruction of an Elizabethan theatre without insisting upon the necessarily conjectured nature of much of it, in view of the limited evidence now available; but if with this caution in mind the reader chooses to accept my findings here, I believe he will find himself somewhere not far from the truth." from the Preface.
