The Indians, wiser than George, saw this. But their warnings fell on deaf ears, and all the greater was the shock when Alexander and Perrette ran away together. What happened to these two strongly contrasted brothers, how the one deteriorated with success, and how the other, left behind with the Indians, grew with their help out of bitterness to serenity, is the backbone to Mr. Eastlake's deeply compelling novel. Its special distinction, however, lies in the author's extraordinary comprehension and sympathy with the Indians, who people this wide, fierce, lovely, wondrous land. They take George Bowman under their friendly wing. Made for laughter, they make us laugh, and wonder, too. They come, in fact, to dominate the book. Foxing to end pages and some to edges.
