A critique of "the afflictions of modern man: false collectivity, false subjectivity.." the latter defined here as "striving of the individual who wishes to glorify himself" &c &c. Lownthal an early member Frankfurt School, emigrated 1934, wound up professor of sociology at UC Berkeley.
