Sobre este artículo

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1933. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. 9" by 6". Not Stated. James George Frazer's famous comparative study of magic and religion, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. A new abridged edition. In the publisher's original full cloth binding with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. With a beautiful engraved frontispiece. A fascinating and comprehensive history of magic and religion in Europe, including chapters on Greek mythology, nature worship, taboos, rituals, fire festivals and more. Frazer offered a modernist approach to discussing religion, treating it as a cultural phenomenon rather than from a theological perspective. He argued that humans progress from magic, through religious belief, into scientific thought. The influence of The Golden Bough on contemporary European literature and thought was substantial. James George Frazer was a Scottish social anthropologist and folklorist, best known for his studies on mythology and religion. The half title page is present. With four pages of the publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book. In the publisher's full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with some light shelf wear to the edges. Discolouration marks to the boards. Very light offsetting to the paste-downs and free endpapers. The original, unclipped dust wrapper is in very smart condition. Shelf wear to the edges with some chipping to the spine. Spine is darkened. The odd, light mark to the panels. Near Fine

Sinopsis

The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion is a wide-ranging, comparative study of mythology and religion, written by Scottish anthropologist Sir James George Frazer (1854–1941). It first was published in two volumes in 1890; the third edition, published 1906–15, comprised twelve volumes. It was aimed at a broad literate audience raised on tales as told in such publications as Thomas Bulfinch's The Age of Fable, or Stories of Gods and Heroes (1855).
