Erik Barnouw (June 23, 1908 - July 19, 2001) was a U.S. historian of radio and television broadcasting. Barnouw was elected chairman of the Writers Guild of America in 1957. In 1978 he became chief of the Library of Congress's newly created Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division. He is best known for his history of U.S. radio and television, a three volume series first published in 1966. Volume 1, "A Tower in Babel," covered radio until 1933; the second volume, "'The Golden Web," covered broadcasting until the 1950s; the final volume, "The Image Empire," discussed the rise and growth of television. Tells how radio and television became an integral part of American life, of how a toy became an industry and a force in politics, business, education, religion, and international affairs. The giant broadcasting networks are the "golden web" of the title of this continuation of Mr. Barnouw's definitive history of American broadcasting. By 1933, the National Broadcasting Company was established as a country-wide network, and the Columbia Broadcasting System was beginning to challenge it. By 1953, at the volume's close, a new giant, television, had begun to dominate the industry, a business colossus.
