Tokyo: The Hokuseido Press, 1941. First edition, limited. Hardcover. 181pp. Duodecimo [18.5 cm] Dark red cloth covered boards with printed paper title labels on the spine and front cover. Very good. The cloth on the front board has multiple ripples. The largest ripples are about 1/2 of an inch wide by 1/2 inch thick. The spine ends and edges of the covers are lightly rubbed. Very minor spine lean. There is a bookseller's tiny label on the front free endsheet. Tanned pages. In a very good dust jacket. Ever so slightly soiled. The spine is mildly darkened. There is a date and price written in pencil on the front inside flap. One of 500 copies. Lafcadio Hearn was a well-known journalist, author, educator, translator, and interpreter of Japanese life.

Slight creases, rubbing and browning to wrappers; small chip to the bottom of the spine, else a Very Good copy internally clean, with a tight spine. 144pp. Later issue of the English-language reprinting of 10 short stories and sketches in all, with the compiler's footnotes (and a few bibliographical references). See BAL #8009: citing the original edition, with 1928 imprint (actually issued in January of 1929); their entry based on a 1931 reprinting. A rare pre-war Japanese imprint in any case, in fairly good and tight internal conditionFew b/w Decorations (including Title page).
