"In 1793 Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe ordered a road cut through the wilderness of Upper Canada - a military link westward from Lake Ontario and a spur to settlement. The settlers did come; they and their buildings are the subject of this book. The road became the spinal cord of southwestern Ontario. The authors follow it through Oakville, Dundas, and Ancaster, and on to London, with stops in Waterdown, Brantford, St. George, Paris, and Woodstock.".
