No Jacket. Red cloth binding is very clean, unmarked, tight and solid, sewn binding. Gilt titles on spine and gilt decoration on front. Corners and spine head and heel are lightly scuffed. Gold end papers with tape marks and book plate. Pages lightly toned, quite clean, no underlining, no highlighting, no markings of any kind, no creases. An unusual and interesting social history of England travelling along the Great North Road which was originally built by the Romans and is 400 miles long, from London to Edinburgh. The author traces the historical happenings along this road and surrounding areas, from Viking Raids, the Arthurian Legend, the Norman Conquest, the Elizabethans, the Great Rebellion, numerous battles, Cromwell's significance, the Industrial Revolution--among some of the major historical events explored. 331 pages with Acknowledgments, Notes, and Queries; Index. 5.75 x 8.5 inches. 1961, The Macmillan Company, New York, New York, USA
