Sobre este artículo
New York: Oaksmith & Co., Five issues, volume I, January to July, (omitting July as issued), 1859. Small quarto (10.25" x 7"), 664 pages, profusely illustrated from woodcuts. Publisher's gilt-lettered quarter black morocco & black pebbled cloth. Text in two columns.
Ex-library with rubber-stamp of the Frank J. Basloe Library at the ffep (no other marks). Binding worn, rubbed & scuffed, evidence of bookplate removal at the front pastedown, hinges cracked, front hinge nearly failed, foxing & toning, still quite useful.
Seba Smith & wife Elizabeth Oakes Smith purchased Emerson's Magazine, previously known as Putnam's Monthly, in 1858, renaming it The Great Republic thereafter. Ms. Smith, a prominant women's rights activist as well as author, journalist, poet, & editor, contibutes 9 articles largely regarding conditions in New York City including:
"The Tombs, The Great City Prison."
"The Sewing Girls of New York."
"The Street Musicians of New York."
"The Ragpickers of New York."
Apparently unsuccessful, publication ceased after one year.
