Very scarce. The second edition, first published in 1875. This work is comprised of a number of biographies of eminent men throughout history, from great monarchs to poets, actors, statesmen, engineers, artists and philosophers. Including Alfred the Great, King Canute, the Duke of Wellington, Oliver Cromwell, Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Christopher Wren, and many more. Edited by James Mason. Illustrated with thirteen plates, including an extra illustrated title page. Collated, complete. Prize bookplate of James Hubbard dated 1879, to the front paste down. Bound in the publisher's original green cloth. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the extremities. The occasional mark to cloth and a little darkening to the spine. Hinges are a little strained. Lacking free endpapers. Prize bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with the odd mark. Tear to gutter of illustrated title page. Very Good

Where are We?
Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
