The Green Gables Letters: From L. M. Montgomery to Ephraim Weber, 1905 - 1909

Toronto: Ryerson Press, 1960. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The interior of the book is tight and complete. The front fixed end paper has a bookplate, with three areas blacked out, presumably to obscurre identifying information. A former owner has stored a contemporary newspaper review at the back of the book. The newsprint has yellowed with age, and transferred the colour to the last page and rear fixed end paper. The article is still there, but is now in a mylar folder to prevent further damage. The rest of the book is clean and fresh. The yellow covers are bright, with light wear at tips and corners. The dust jacket is also in Very Good condition, with light edgewear overall. It is now also in a protective ive mylar cover. Synopsis: These letters were written to Ephraim Webster, during the period when she was establishing herself as a published writer, and working on Anne of Green Gables. Webster, then a homesteader in Alberta, also had ambitions as a writer, and the letters were part of a friendship that lasted 40 years. When Webster died, these letters were turned over to Wilfrid Eggleston, his old friend, for deposit in the Public Archives of Canada. Eggleston edited and published them in 1960.
