Edward Verrall Lucas (1868 – 1938) was an London bookseller essayist, playwright, novelist and publisher. The story in this edition is about booksellers.
Lucas was born to a Quaker family near London, Lucas apprenticed to a bookseller at age 16 years. After that he joined the staff of humorous London magazine Punch in 1904 and remained there for the rest of his life. He also was a journalist at The Globe, one of London's evening papers. He was a prolific writer, celebrated for his short essays, novels, plays, travel books, and books about painters. Lucas' publications include Life of Charles Lamb (1905) and dozens of essay series, as well as an article on Jane Austen in the the Encyclopædia Britannica. He wrote the play The Visit of the King which was produced at the Palace Theatre,1912.
In his personal life, he married children's-book writer Elizabeth Gertrude; they had one child, Audrey Lucas, who became an actor, playwright and novelist. Lucas received honorary degrees from St Andrews and Oxford Universities and was appointed a member of The Order of The Companions of Honor, as well as member of The Royal Commission of The Historical Monuments of England in 1928.
