Sobre este artículo
Benares: The Kama Shastra Society, 1888. A famous work by the Persian poet Sheikh Muslih-uddin Sa'di Shirazi (1193-1291) in a famous translation by Edward Rehatsek, even more famed due its publication by the Kama Shastra Society, a fictitious organization formed by Sir Richard Francis Burton and Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot in 1883 to avoid the censorship Obscene Publications Act of 1857. The Society continued to Burton's death in 1890, but this was the last book of five that were published. Scarce to rare. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Printing. White vellum binding with beveled edges, ruled and titled in gilt on the spine, which also has the date "1888" at its foot - this was eliminated in the second edition. Clean text; viii, 282 pages; fore and bottom edges untrimmed. There is a bookplate from a previous owner on the front paste-down; offset to pages 12 and 13, likely from a laid-in newspaper clipping; some spotting to the endpapers only.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
