In origine l'opera era promessa alla scrittrice Johanna Baillie in quanto doveva far parte di una raccolta, ma quando Scott la terminò si accorse che era troppo lunga, decise di scriverne un'altra e questa venne pubblicata separatamente. Persino il copyright per la pubblicazione venne pagato 1000 sterline: una cifra esorbitante per il periodo.
