Sobre este artículo
[HBCU] [Hampton School] Mrs. M. F. Armstrong and Helen W. Ludlow. Hampton and its Students by Two of its Teachers. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1874. First edition, 257 pages. Measures 6.25" x 8.5". Beautiful folding wood-engraved frontispiece of the school and its grounds, 16 wood-engraved illustrations in text courtesy of Messrs. Haper Bros., 5 full-page illustrations, original gilt-stamped green cloth boards. The first book on the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia, founded in 1868 just 7 years before this first edition, for the education of freed slaves, the book describes at length relations between freed slaves and northern whites. Among the school's most famous students was Booker T. Washington. Ex-Library labels on bookplate from Washington Literary Society and Pennsylvania State College with text "For special use of the Department of Political Science and Economics." Wood engraved frontispiece is present but loose and has two folds lengthwise. Title page is also present but loose with perforated library stamp at top corner. All other pages attached and original textblock is tight and clean. Overall, in very good condition. A beautifully illustrated book documenting one of the earliest and most important institutes of higher learning for African Americans.
