Ex-Library, light foxing and occasional small marginal stains, spine tops of volumes 1 & 2 chipped (1 is light), all hinges intact, but leather is somewhat weak in many with some resultant cracking, some rubbing of extremities, esp. corners: VG. 8vo. Frontispiece engravings in each volume + 12 additional engravings. There are 3 more engravings than described in the preliminary text.. TEXT IN FRENCH. TEXTE EN FRANCAIS. He also won an Oscar for the screenplay of Places in the Heart, which Nestor Almendros also lensed. Nestor Almendros won the Academy Award for Cinematography for Days of Heaven. He was nominated for Academy Awards for Kramer vs Kramer, The Blue Lagoon and Sophie's Choice. He did cinematography for Claire's Knee, Chloe in the Afternoon, Cockfighter, The Last Metro, and many others. He was known for using natural light in his films. First U.S. edition / First printing. Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) British Enlightenment polymath. Scientist, theologian, philosopher he was the first to identify oxygen and other core gases. He invented soda water. In 1794 he emigrated to Pennsylvania where was befriended by Thomas Jefferson as 'one of the few lives precious to mankind'. His achievements have only recently begun to be acknowledged. His metaphysical works influenced Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill, and Herbert Spencer. Priestley saw matter as the manifestation of spiritual force.

Very rare complete set of 12x original colour postcards (undated, but from 1929-1930). Unused and in Very Good condition (with very occasional spotting). All but 1 bear the printed signature 'JOHNS'. Illustrated by WE Johns who was later to create 'Biggles'. Though no publisher is stated, these were published by WE Johns' "Aircraft & General Fine Art Company" in East Grinstead, Sussex.
