Sobre este artículo

Well illustrated memory photo album of a USSR soldier's military service, 1975-77. This album has 12 drawings and 151 photos. It includes two drawings covered by lacquer on the inside cover, with an additional 11 color drawings on the transparent paper between sheets. Album measures 13" x 9.25" with most photos around 5" x 3.5". Tissue guard over the first page with a drawing of the archetypal Soviet "Nation's Mother" paired with the slogan "Soviet Motherland!" inviting the viewer to take the military oath. The album is decorated by appliqués from velvet paper, postcards and cuttings from postcards, such as the three flags of the Soviet military - Army, Navy, and Air Forces, and red stars commemorating the victory in the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet metonym for WWII. There are also a few instances of drawings of young women, including one of ostensibly our soldier embracing his lover after returning home. Our soldier was stationed in Kingisepp, a town in the Leningrad Oblast, between St. Petersburg and the Estonian border, and we believe he was trained in missile operations in an artillery company. This was a period of relative peace for the USSR, and this soldier's military service reflects that. However, just a few years later the Soviets would invade Afghanistan, an imperialistic move that accelerated the union's decline. The soldier who has put this album together has filled its pages with photographs of his comrades, who appear as a band of friends in their late teens and early twenties. Military service of 2-3 years was mandatory for young Soviet men, and from the pictures we get the sense that this was a rite of passage and a bonding experience, moreso than a genuine desire to be a soldier and wage war. Despite that, the legacy of WWII looms large over this album as it has for Russian society for generations, and the sacrifice of those Soviets who died in the Eastern Front is frequently honored throughout with various illustrations and emblems. An interesting look from a western perspective on military service across the Iron Curtain.
