London, 1865. First Edition. Hard Cover. (London: Privately Printed for the Author 1865). First UK Edition. Two Volumes. Publisher's original green cloth, the front cover of each volume with a fine gilt stamp of a Lyre Bird surrounded by an elaborate blind border, repeated in blind on the back covers, spines lettered and decorated in gilt. Yellow end-papers. Half-titles. 2-page publisher's advertisement at the end of volume one announcing the publication of Volume 1 in royal octavo containing 636 pages at a price of £1 5s; and on the second of December 1865 will be issued the second and concluding volume at the same price. The verso of the advertisement leaf has details of "The Birds of Great Britain" by John Gould. Both volumes in fine condition with slight pushing at the head and tail of the spine of each. Gilt really bright and un-faded. No inscriptions. Scarce in this lovely condition. This was to be Gould's final work on the subject of the birds of Australia. Ferguson 10031.
