The appearance of the jacket is marred by some significant foxing ( age related spotting), most particularly to the rear. There are two closed tears, approx. half inch in length at the top and bottom of the spine, front of cover. I have added a clear removeable cover to the jacket to enhance its appearance, and lessen any further deterioration.The book itself is in otherwise excellent condition- firmly bound, no loose or marked pages. About the book: The well-respected Barry Ulanov provides a great reference source for the Jazz enthusiast, giving an overview of every aspect of Jazz (as it was in the 50's) - history, instruments, and the various schools and their adherents. The historically interesting introduction by Kingsley Amis reads (in part) thus " The last two or three years have seen a rapid acceleration.towards final respectability in Great Britain." Amis goes on to contrast the" special occasion" bound constraints of classical music, with the spontaneous character of Jazz, and praises the author's "level-headed" approach to the contemporary scene, which emphasises the "primary and peculiar qualities of the music". If you want to learn more of "traditional Jazz" or perhaps gain an understanding of how Jazz was percieved in the 1950's, this is the book for you.
