A novel that recounts the life of the surgeon William Palmer who was also a racehorse owner, a confessed forger who got girls into trouble, doped horses, and robbed a few people. The novel is based on an actual trial that took place in 1856 and it tells of the life of that time, examines the question of whether or not Palmer was guilty of the poisioning he was accused of.
