Sobre este artículo
New York: The Macmillan Company. Very Good-. 1915. Tenth Printing. Hardcover. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 387 pages; [SIGNED MLS] 1915 Macmillan. HC 10th printing. Soundly bound and clean in original green cloth with titles in gilt to inset burgundy colored rectangles bordered in gilt. A strikingly sincere and earnest MLS on embossed letterhead stationery of "The Players - Sixteen Gramercy Park" addressed to "Sam" is tipped in on the front flyleaf: " Dear Sam - / Your note about / that book of mine is not just a / short note but a nice long one / & made me very happy, Sam, / because I think a lot of / your opinion. I'm almighty / glad you liked it enough to / take the trouble to write like / that. Thanks again with / all my heart. / Ernest " Unfortunately the identity of the letter's recipient is unknown, but his opinion and correspondence clearly much valued by Poole. Poole started his writing career as a muckraking labor related journalist, and his pivot to writing The Harbor, set on the Brooklyn Heights waterfront, involved several years of research and writing. It was very well received and went into multiple reprintings in 1915. His second novel "The Family" was awarded the first Pulitzer prize for fiction in 1918, but the sense was that he was being given the award on the substance and success in addressing issues of Labor in "The Harbor." This copy slightly shelf cocked in the spine and a little dulled with mild crimping to cloth at spine ends. VG- to VG; Signed by Author .
