This bibliography attempts a comprehensive listing of works by and about black writers of what has come to be known as the Harlem Renaissance – a period extending from the 1920s to the mid-1930s. In addition to major and minor works of the period, peripheral items are included in order to provide a broad picture of the ambiance of the times. Therefore, news items, miscellaneous information about the social and cultural milieu, editorials, letters to the editor, and material on film and filmstrip are included. In total, the book lists 913 items, most with associated descriptive paragraphs and, in some cases, the author's assessments of the work.
The illustrations accompanying this description show the book's covers, the Title page, and three (3) typical 2-page spreads of text.
