Early manuscript index on front binder's blank in both volumes. Spines darkened and slightly crazed, joints a bit worn and slightly cracked in places (but sound), occasional spotting and foxing to Part I, brown spot in fore-edge of Part VII, clean 5 cm tear in top edge of leaf 63/4 of Part VII, with no loss, still a good set in contemporary dress. Old morocco faced slipcase. First editions, first printings, of each part of Irving's second major sequence publication, with BAL's state 'A' of the text on page 240. 1875 Richmond and Patten first edition. 259 pages.De Forest was a Civil War veteran turned novelist, best known for his realistic fiction. This book is a fictionalized account of the Credit Mobilier scandal, a real life story of corruption that involved Railroad construction contracts, and several US Congressmen. Uncommon, no copies of this first edition held by OCLC member libraries, and only one other copy listed online. Condition of the book is Good. The binding is sound. Inside pages are complete and unmarked. The main condition issue is moderate wear to the boards, with some discoloration to the board cloth from old damp exposure (interior is not affected), and loss of cloth at the head and tail of the spine.Please message me with any questions.
