Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf of Books originally published in 1909 is a 50 volume anthology of classic works from world literature. This anthology originated from a challenge made by P. F. Collier to Dr. Eliot based on speeches he made stating that a good liberal education could be had by reading 15 minutes a day from a collection of books that could fit on a five foot shelf. Collier challenged him to make good on this statement by selecting such a collection of works--the Harvard Classics were the result. 451 pages. 8.6 x 5.7 inches. P.F.Collier & Son, New York, 1959.
