FIRST AND ONLY EDITION (1918), date from British Library accession, 4to, 305 x 245 mm, 12¼ x 9½ inches, blue cloth spine, pale green upper cover illustrated red, black, white and grey, (24) pages. Coloured title page vignette, 23 pages of jolly, brightly coloured illustrations, mainly 1 letter per page, each with 1 illustration and a few descriptive rhyming lines, E and F, K and L, W and X, Y and Z share a page. Expertly recased, restitched and rebacked, original backstrip laid on, corners slightly worn, 3 tiny chips to fore-edge of upper cover, edges of same lightly browned and very slightly damp flecked, a few tiny rust marks to lower cover, neat name on pastedown, endpapers faintly browned, 2 small worm tracks to top outer corner of front pastedown persisting to page D, just a pinhole on that page, tiny pale stain to top edge of title page, 30 mm (1¼") closed tear to lower edge of page D, 15 mm (¾") closed tear to margin of 2 other pages, all neatly repaired, small piece missing from outer corner of pages D and I, no loss of image or text, expertly repaired, 9 pages have small pale marks to inner margin where previously repaired with sellotape, now removed, some scoring to rear endpaper (child's drawings erased). A good plus copy of a rather uncommon Hassall ABC. Author not named so probably written and illustrated by Hassall. 2 copies located in British libraries and 1 in the US in Cotsen's Children's Library No.14757.
