I just finished “Hell Hawks! “ by Robert F. Dorr and Thomas D. Jones, and I recommend this book. The story is about the P-47 fighter pilots of the 365th Fighter Group, its formation, the fight it took to the ground targets and Luftwaffe, and its part in winning World War II.Mr. Dorr and Mr. Jones have done a masterful job in not only publishing the history of this group, but have told the story of the men that made up this group. The entire book is a very well thought out combination of group history, and personal stories of the pilots and support personnel of this group. One detail that got my attention was the seemingly complete lack of intelligence the Allies had on the Me 262. This didn’t stop the pilots of the 356th; they bore right in, guns blazing. This is not to diminish the determination of the ground crews and all of the support that put these airplanes in the air, day after day, month after month.I have read many of these types of books and I really appreciate the way Mr. Dorr and Mr. Jones have put together this book. The story is told in a smooth, easy transition from group formation, training, deploying, and finally winning the war. Interspersed throughout the book are personal stories that belong exactly where they are placed. “Hell Hawks!” is a compelling book to read, and kept me up many nights wanting to know what happens next.Enjoy reading this book, I did. I understand that Mr. Dorr has autographed copies available and I know what I’m getting some friends for Christmas.
