Sobre este artículo

New York: Othello Associates, 1958. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/fair. Octavo, 128pp. A very good copy in the publisher's light blue boards. A touch shaken, but a sound, clean copy. In a fair dust jacket, with numerous chips and tears, and tape repairs to the verso at the spine. This copy SIGNED and very warmly INSCRIBED by Eslanda Goode Robeson, Paul's wife, on the front free endpaper, to famed composer Oscar Hammerstein II, who composed the music for "Show Boat," a production in which Robeson had his start in the popular theatre: "For Oscar Hamemrstein 2nd with thanks for your remarks in the Mike Wallace interview. Sincerely, Eslanda Robeson." On March 15, 1958, this interview aired on CBS. At the end of the interview, which touched on both artistic and political questions, Wallace asked Hammerstein what he thought of Paul Robeson, whose rendition of Hammerstein's "Ol' Man River" was so loved by the public. Hammerstein, a liberal who was no doubt conscious of the danger in this period of associating with a communist in public, carefully stated that he diverged with Robeson on some political questions, but refused to stand in judgment on his views, continuing: "I wonder how I would feel if I were the son of a minister, a Phi Beta Kappa student at Rutgers, an All-American tackle, a tall, handsome man; a singer, an actor, an athlete, [voice rising] and could not live in the same hotel as the other members in my theatrical troupe! I would be good and sore, and I don't know what I might do." No doubt Mrs. Robeson was pleased to hear a major figure in American popular music voice this kind of solidarity with her besieged husband. A pleasing association copy. (Note that the book is not signed by Paul Robeson).

Sinopsis

Paul Leroy Robeson (April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was an American concert singer (bass), recording artist, actor, athlete, scholar who was an advocate for the Civil Rights Movement in the first half of the 20th century. He gained international attention for his work in the arts and he merged his artistic career with political activism to speak out for the equality of minorities and the rights of workers throughout the world. His friendship with the Soviet Union and the Soviet peoples plus criticism of the lack of progress in civil rights in the United States at the outset of the Cold War and during the age of McCarthyism brought scrutiny, conflict and retribution from the American government. His public persona became diminished, his income plummeted and he faced isolation from the Civil Rights Movement in the second half of the 20th century.

Sobre Cleveland Book Company

We are proud members of the ABAA.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
