Sobre este artículo

New York: Literary Digest Books, Funk & Wagnalls Co., 1934. 8vo. v, [1], 314 pp. Green cloth, dark green lettering, lozenge illust. front cover, photo endpapers of steam engine wheat thresher (slight shelfwear, very minor wear to lower corners), w/ d.j. cover art by G.O. Parshall (minor rubbing, edgewear, slight foxing), still NF/VG copy, from the library of Walter F. Pitts (1924-2007), born Waterville, WA, later successful career as lawyer, and then with SEC in Olympia, & Seattle, WA, w/ long clipping tipped-in detailing the history of the book’s writing. First edition, stated, of this very scarce semi-autobiographical memoir of the famed Weird Tales pulp writer’s years growing up in Waterville, WA in the Big Bend Country. Burks (1898-1974) based many of the incidents on his own family, detailing his family efforts farming in Eastern Washington, and transforming the Pacific Northwest, with some Western dialect. The tipped-in newspaper clipping details how the book was written in two weeks on a $ 1000 bet from Fred Smith, president of the New York chapter of the American Fiction Guild. Burks was one of the most prolific and successful pulp writers, authoring more than 800 stories under his own name, another 600 under assorted pseudonyms, and averaged more than 1 million words per year. The inventive storyteller wrote countless macabre, weird menace, adventure, detective, and aviation stories for Weird Tales, Astounding Stories, Thrilling Wonder Stories, Strange Tales, and others. Exceedingly rare in original dustjacket.
