Photographic end pages, showing the author in various plays. Grey coloured cloth covered boards with dark grey coloured titles to the back strip. The autobiography of Ethel Waters, actress and singer, the second African American to be nominated for an Academy Award, the 1st to star in her own television show and the first African American woman to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. This is how she went from a sordid tenement in Pennsylvania to Broadway. Signed by Ethel Waters on the half title page, along with a gift inscription to Diana Hardy from Joan Shepherd  A member of the cast for 'Member of the Wedding'. . Softening of the back strip edges and a little bumping to the top corner of the front panel. Sunning of the back strip. Very light tanning of the text block edges and pages. Inserted loosely is a programme from The Wharf Theatre and Opera House in Monterey California for 'The Member of the Wedding' starring Ethel Waters  again gift inscribed by Joan Shepard to Diana Harding; along with a newspaper clipping, from the San Francisco Examiner, advertising the same play  with Joan Shepherd noted as a member of the cast.
