The rare first French edition, of what´s arguably the most influential buccaneering account; from the Hamsworth library. 1686. Paris. Jacques Lefebvre. Two volumes in 12mo (164 mm x 87 mm). 1 [blank] + 15 ff. + 342 + 12 ff. + 1 [blank]; 1 [blank] + 3 ff. + 384 + 12 ff. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, richly gilt and lettered, worn but still an attractive binding in its original condition. A fine copy, gently browned as often and with a few foxing spots, second title water stained, short tears to folding plates. First French edition. Besides its rarity, this edition is also important for its illustrations don´t derive from either the Dutch original or two earliest English editions. The translation was prepared by Frontigniéres, from Exquemelin´s own manuscript; the first edition in all was published in Dutch in 1678 under the title De Americaensche Zee-Roovers. The success was immediate, translations followed and editions continued until the 18th century. Exquemelin (1645 – 1707) was a French Huguenot, in 1666 made sale towards the Antilles, his ship was allegedly attacked by pirates and after reaching Tortuga he was apparently sold to a local who subsequently sold to a surgeon of some sort, he would teach him his office and eventually grant him his freedom against payment. At an uncertain date, Exquemelin became a privateer; as a pirate, he participated in the raid of Maracaibo in 1669 and that of Panama in 1670 under Morgan. His experiences and observations were concentrated in his memoires. The detail with which Exquemelin describes the lootings, plundering, life and adventures of these seamen is, and was unequaled for a long time. The illustrations include seven folding maps and views; the Maracaibo and Panama maps closely follow the Dutch, a large folding map of the Spanish Main is entirely new to this edition. The text from this edition was substantially augmented by the editor, Journel; he is also responsible for shading light onto the term "buccaneer". Provenance: the Hamsworth copy (lot 6479, Sotheby´s, December 1949, 2/10/- GBP).

The author and his father, Johann Reinhold, served as naturalists on the expedition. London: Printed For Richard Phillips By J.G.Barnard, 1806-07. First Edition of the English Translation, abridged from the original Russian of 1802. “One of the fundamental and…early books on the Aleutian Islands, and particularly on Unalashka.” (Lada-Mocarski) Sarytschev’s journal gives an account of the first major exploring expedition sent out by the Russians to the Frozen Sea and the North Pacific after Bering’s second expedition of 1741. It was the last of the major Russian surveys of the eastern coast of Siberia and required nine years to accomplish (1785-94). During that time the expedition visited the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, Kodiak, Montague Island and Prince William Sound. Alaska and the Aleutian Islands were here carefully charted for the first time. Joseph Billings, who has previously accompanied Cook on his last fatal voyage and subsequently entered the Russian navy, was selectec by Catherine II to command the expedition. Sarytschev served as surveyor on the voyage. Another… Leer más

First Edition of the French Translation of the third volume of Müller's Nachrichten von Seereisen... (Sammlung Russiche Geschichte (1758)), an invaluable reference source for the history of Russian discovery and exploration in north-east Asia and along the north-west coast of America. It is the best contemporary account of Bering's first and second expeditions to Bering Strait and the western limits of North America, during which he discovered Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Müller served as a scientific associate on Bering's second voyage, 1741-42. Müller’s work also contains the substance of crucial written reports which he found in the archives in the town of Jakutsk which established that the Bering Strait had in fact first been discovered and navigated by Semyon Dezhnyov in 1648. Descripción:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
