This is a beautifully illustrated copy of "The World's Show" by Henry Mayhew. "1851: or, The Adventures of Mr. and Mrs. Sandboys and Family, Who Came up to London to 'Enjoy Themselves,' and to See the Great Exhibition." Published in 1851 (though undated) by David Bogue in London; 1st edition in book form following the serialized edition. The book features wonderful illustrations (many are fold-outs or 2-page spreads) by GEORGE CRUIKSHANK. Handsome, custom-bound copy with three-quarter leather, gilt lettering on the spine with raised bands, and marbled end papers. The book is a fantastic example of Cruikshank's work.Condition:Some very light soiling at the top of the front cover; clean back cover and spine; sharp corners; bright gilt lettering on the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The pages are in overall very good condition - mostly clean with only a few random, light stains/ink smudges found; no writing found. This was even more true in the 19th-century when information about the members of the Secret Service was harder to come by. This is a scarce, very early Charles Dickens book that was published when he was only 25 years old. "PUBLIC LIFE OF MR. TULRUMBLE, ONCE MAYOR OF MUDFOG" by Boz ("Boz" was the pen name of Dickens). 1837; Carey, Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches, from Bentley's Miscellany, and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore (spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page) Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." There are 11 stories in all - please see the photos for the complete list of contents. This is one of the first stories by Dickens published in book form in the United States.Condition:Worn corners (the tips of the boards are exposed); 1/2" cloth tears at the top edge of the spine, small cloth tears at the bottom edge. The front board bows at the center just a bit. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end papers. Although the label on the front cover states "1852-1855," one issue from 1850 is included. "A Family Paper, Devoted to Piety, Morality, Brotherly Love - No Sectarianism, No Controversy." The Youth's Companion was a weekly magazine/newspaper published by Nathaniel Willis in Boston from 1827 to 1929. Each issue contains 4 pages and features an engraving on the first page. In contemporary 1/4 calf with raised bands and blue labels at one stage this set must have been particularly eye-catching but sadly time has taken its toll somewhat. In various states of condition ranging from Good/VG to Fair only. Most with substantial off-setting in places, many tissue-guards missing from the plates.
