About this item: 1612 Pp. total. 8vo. (4) individual volume publications, complementary bindings, each 3/4 leather (Brown, Black, Red, Eggplant) hardcover features title/gilt tooled design on spine covers, marble boards and endpapers, gilt upper leaf edges, book #1 profusely illustrated text with a series of plates at rear. Personalized with initials at spine heel of each volume, ex-libris labels adhered to 2 volumes, hand-written ownership inscription and Paris hotel notations.

Dimensions: 8.5 - 9 H x 5.88-6 D x 1.25 (5 overall) inches.

Provenance: Ex-libris label of D. Quincy Smith. Our research did not find much to remark about the previous owner's lineage. His exquisite taste left much to glean about his status, character and interests (e.g. Beautiful bookplate designed and engraved by a master at the craft, signed by the artist at lower right, binding selection), book content and what we can speculate from his notations. One could speculate he was a man of means, a gentleman, American or Englishman of the Christian faith, on a tour or pilgrimage of the continent in the early 20th century. It appears he spent a considerable amount of time in Paris and various points of interests throughout the country, 1920s; e.g. Loire Valley and the Chateau Donjon de Loches. One of his notes highlighted celebration of the Pentecost feast day, 1921. The select readings, not inclusive of the list at the rear of vol. #2, here suggest an interest in the history and architecture of the Middle Ages, and the 16th century culture and society that evolved thereafter.

CONDITION NOTES: Very good; tight and square bindings, to be expected light wear with age and use, sporadic wear at extremities (e.g. rubbed at spine crown/heel and board edges, clean light-medium (varies) age-toned pages - exception [ownership ex-libris labels and handwritten notations at front free endpapers (see images) and a list of books/authors on rear endpapers of book #2.].
