Also known as Henry the Great, Henry IV was notable for being the first French king from the House of Bourbon. Hardouin de Perefixe's account of the life and reign of the 16th-century monarch is perhaps one of the best biographical sketches of Henry IV. It first appeared in 1661 and was met with significant popularity throughout Europe, so much so, that an English edition was demanded shortly after its initial release.

According to Willems, this 1664 edition is "the best and most complete of the four French editions of this book."
