LS. 1pg. 8” x 10”. August 5, 1869. Washington, DC. A letter signed “Geo. T. Metcalf” to Benson J. Lossing: “I am instructed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter…and to inform you that it would afford the Secretary of the Interior pleasure to furnish you with a copy of Schoolcraft’s History of the Indian Tribes of the United States, if it were in his power to do so; But, there is no copy of that publication in the custody of this Department, excepting one which is kept for official use.” The letter is in fine condition on “Department of the Interior” letterhead.
