Slightly shaken, otherwise clean and gently age toned. Now in mylar. Old gift inscription in pencil to ffep dated 1924. ** The Author, Samuel Adams Drake (1833-1905), presents this as a "wandering" set of essays touching on interesting people, places and happenings in old Middlesex County, in the Boston, Massachusetts area. He worked as a journalist and published twenty three books. His better-known father, Samuel G. Drake, also was a notable author of Americana. This book contains early examples of the heliotype--" a printing process in which an impression is taken in ink from a gelatine surface that has been exposed under a negative and prepared for printing." There are 20 unnumbered, tissue-guarded leaves of such plates, plus the map, in this volume, as well as traditional engravings. WorldCat says this is only the third heliotype book published in the US. by Osgood (Hanson). OCLC 2859336. Scarce.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good Minus.
