. Edition: Second Edition, Binding: Contemporary full calf, rebacked expertly, 5 raised bands in 6 compartments, compartments with gilt floral motifs, red and black morocco labels on two and three respectively.
, Notes: Jonas Hanway (1712-1786) was a merchant and philanthropist. This is the first of several books by this resourceful traveler, best known as the “pioneer user” of the umbrella (Cox). His trip down the Volga River was fraught with danger, including an armed robbery by bandits in Astrabad (in modern Russia) during a rebellion. He later received 85% in restitution after the rebellion was quelled and the instigator (a rebel governor) put to death. Once he returned to London from his trip in 1750, he filled several public positions, had a street in London named after him, and was posthumously honoured by a monument to him in Westiminster Abbey (Cox). Curiously, Dr. Johnson is said to have harshly rebuked Hanway’s essay criticizing tea-drinking (DNB).
