First American edition, with additions and corrections. 4 volumes with a toltal of 21 plates and 6 frontispieces. Volume 1 (590 pp.) contains two frontispieces of George Washington and two plates; Volume 2 (493 pp.) contains one frontispiece, of Franklin, plus one plate; Volume 3 (517 pp.) contains a frontispiece of William Penn, plus 5 plates (one colored); Volume 4 (415 pp.) contains a frontispiece of Benjamin Franklin and a frontispiece of Wm. Winterbotham, plus 13 plates, 10 appendices and a general index. Lacks folding maps. Heavily foxed, as usual, but intact. Howes 581.
