Good-Very Good/no dustwrapper. 8vo. fold-out map 1st Edition of Samuel Gridley Howe's historical outline of the Greek Revolution, with gift-inscription to prelims by the author's son Henry Marion Howe and Eliza Howe (possibly SG Howe's daughter, the writer Laura Elizabeth Howe), inscription dated Boston December 1895, and also signed (presumably by the recipient) J.S. (or I.S.) Howe; includes the fold-out frontispiece map (often missing); Samuel Gridley Howe was an American physician, Abolitionist, and advocate for the blind, who (after being inspired by Byron) served as a surgeon in the Greek Revolution; his son Henry Marion Howe was a prominent metallurgist who wrote the Iron and Steel article for the 11th Edition (1911) Britannica; a unique copy with the Howe family connection; bound in (later) three-quarter calf with marbled boards, raised bands with six compartments, black title label with gilt titling to spine, new endpapers; fold-out map in three colours, fragile but holding, with some tears along folds, and tape-repair to reverse side; prelims tanned and with tape-repair along edge of inscription page, scattered foxing/tanning throughout, o.w. Good.
