LONDON: George Bell & Sons, 1870 A nice set of the second edition of Morris's History of British Birds. In 6 volumes with original decorative cloth bindings and 365 hand coloured plates as called for. The bindings are all clean with bright gilt pictures of birds to each front board and gilt titles and decoration to spine. There is some wear: volume I has some cloth splitting at the hinges and splitting at the rear endpaper with rubbing to corners; volumes II, III and IV have very slight pulling to top and bottom of spine and a little rubbing at corners; volume V has very small splits at the top and bottom of the spine; and volume VI has a 1 inch tear at the top of the spine (with no loss) and scuffing at the corners. Internally all have the original endpapers; the first section including the frontispiece is becoming loose on volumes I, II, and III; volume IV is sound but the stitching is looser than on the others. There is a little spotting to some plates and text pages but in general the…

Portland, Maine:: Rebecca Goodale,, 2012.. Edition of 3. 6 x 6"; 18 unnumbered pages. Handmade paper folded into 5 French-folded signatures sewn onto two straps. Handcolored collagraphs and velvet flowers tell the wordless story. Banded with button and thread closure. Rebecca Goodale has been documenting the extinct and endangered flora and fauna of Maine since 1999. Her books in this area, as Nicholas Schroeder said in a review of her exhibition Lullaby, "vivify, celebrate, and elaborate them, often with poetic flourishes, rich metaphor, and abundance of color. Their surfaces mirror her subjects' habitats, and the rhythm of their bindings borrows from their intricate and animate patterns." Once in a while she diverts from the specific theme of extinct and endangered to produce a playful book still with the theme of flora and fauna. Bird, String, Cricket is such a book. It is a playful book with bright colors and velvet flowers a bird, a string, and a cricket.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you're not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as "majestic" and "noble," yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation's founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the…

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., 1968. First edition. ILLUSTRATED COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF ADAPTATIONS OF BIRDS FOR BREEDING BY EXPERT ON DARWIN'S FINCHES. 10 inches tall mauve cloth binding, gilt title to spine, unmarked, very good in good price-clipped dust jacket with edge tears. From dust jacket: "The primary aim of this book is an interpretation of the main adaptations of birds for breeding-whether a species lests solitarily or in colonies, whether it is monogamous or has several mates, the lumber of eggs that it lays, the relative size of its eggs, the rate of development of its eggs and young, and the age at which it first breeds. This book is the first comprehensive survey of these points that has been made, so readers can see what is known, and what emains to be discovered, and hence may be stimulated to add to knowledge. However it is much more than a summary of the facts, for these various adaptations have been interpreted in terms of natural selection, and the author has suggested how each of…

Descripción:
Rising from sandbars on the Platte River with clarion calls, the sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) feels the urgency of spring migration. Elegant, noble, and spiritual, the sandhill crane is one of the most ancient of all birds. More than a half-million strong, flying in squadrons, these majestic creatures point northward to their Arctic and sub-Arctic breeding ranges. Theirs is an epic story of endurance through the ages. With 153 stunning color photographs, On Ancient Wings presents sandhill cranes in their wild but increasingly compromised habitats today. Over the course of five years, Michael Forsberg documented the tall gray birds in habitats ranging from the Alaskan tundra, to the arid High Plains, from Cuban nature preserves to suburban backyards. With an eye for beauty and an uncommon persistence, the author documents the cranes' challenges to adapt and survive in a rapidly changing natural world. Forsberg argues that humankind, for its own sake, should secure the cranes' place in the future.…
