Signed by the author on the front free endpaper who inscribed it previous owner, William Thompson. Extensively illustrated with plates including a color plate of heraldry and a fold-out color map of ancient Costa Rica and additional drawings, photographs, in-text maps. First American edition with 1913 on copyright page, no date on title page, no additional printings noted, originally published in Spanish in 1905. Gilt top foredge. Small piece out of corner of page xxi, not effecting text. Closed horizontal tear to head of jacket spine, spine lettering faded. Corners are bumped. Front gutter is starting. Rare work, I could only find 2 in worldcat.
