Sobre este artículo
London: John W. Parker and Son; later volumes Longman, Green, & Co.,, 1856-70. A classic First editions of the complete set of Froude's great history. Such a set, with first editions throughout and uniformly bound, is uncommon. "The History of England was a great success, to some extent emulating Macaulay's. But Macaulay's tone was brisk and materialistic; Froude's was more gentle, more diffident and elegiac, drawing on the religious controversies of his youth, but reflecting the mid-Victorian public's exhaustion with doctrinal controversy. Its main theme was anti-clerical, but it was not irreligious. For its prose it soon became a classic" (ODNB). The work went through numerous editions, continuing to be printed into the 20th century. With Macaulay and Carlyle, Froude ranks as one of the great Victorian historians. Twelve volumes, octavo (207 x 134 mm). Early 20th-century red half morocco, spines lettered in gilt, gilt in compartments, marbled sides, endpapers, and edges. Slight sunning to spines, still a fine, clean set.
