A collection of recipes and advice for pleasurable entertaining, from a woman of stature, descendant of Roger Puleston of Emral, Worthenbury. The recipes reflect Monaco, offering Tacchino all Storiona, Sole Lucullus, Zabaglione, and Oeufs Poches Marquise, for example. The author was the last Puleston to possess the trove of important manuscript on 16th and 17th century Wales and Ireland known as the Puleston Mss. "On the death of Mrs. Elfrida Puleston in Monaco in 1946 the family papers passed to H.S.H. the Prince of Monaco, whose archivist later arranged their transfer to the British Museum." 1500. Engraving, (23.5 x 29.5 cm. image dimensions). Signed in lower part of impression, "Bassan. inuet. loa. Sadeler sc." and CU. priuil. S. Caes. M." and ex S. Lvc. xvi. cap." Lacking the legend below the image. One of Sadeler's three "Kitchen" scenes, this one with Lazaraus seen from behind at right with two dogs,, seated and looking at a dinner table with the rich man, a kitchen with a maid tending a spit over a fire and other servants preparing food. The wall has a display of plates, pots and aging game hanging from hooks, some fish in a basket, and vegetables and a broken egg in the foreground, a boy taking a basket with eggs from under the table, and a monkey behind him. After Jacopo Bassano, c. 1598. The engraving was laid down onto another sheet of paper at some point in the mid 20th century, having been trimmed to the edges of the image at some earlier date. The outlines of the legend have been drawn in. Some very light foxing to the image. [British Museum 1868, 0612.499; Spencer Museum of… Leer más

Descripción:
Preston, England: George Cartwright, 1852. Rare original daguerreotype stereoview picturing the plaster sculpture by Irish-born sculptor John Henry Foley ( 1818-1874) that was exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition in the Crystal Palace. An albumen print by Claude-Marie Ferrier is featured in Anthony Hamber's monumental work, Photography and the 1851 Great Exhibition, but the photographer for this daguerreotype stereoview is as yet unidentified. Hamber mentions that the Victoria and Albert Museum has a copy of this stereoview in their collection. Strangely enough the V&A misidentifies the image as "Bacchus Being Fed Grapes by [Venus?]" and makes no mention of the Foley sculpture. That is the only other copy of this daguerreotype stereoview I have been able to locate. On the verso of our stereoview is Cartwright's label as well as a handwritten identification of the subject. The daguerreotype is in excellent condition, with no bleeding at the edges. The cloth backing is… Leer más
