Draper was the corresponding sect'y of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin & Jackson was a lawyer associated with the lead mining industry in the state and later became territorial attorney general in 1842. Thwaites, of course, is a noted Western and frontier historian. An accession bookplate is affixed to the ffep. The library or institution is not identified, but the plate has a shield & a statement in Latin around it. No other library markings. Vg condition, but we note the lower front cover corner is bumped and soft with just a touch of fraying. This original edition very scarce, perhaps rare. Your bookseller found this copy in Quebec ten years ago!

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. Has small bookworm hole affecting the upper right corner of pages 23- 83, completely out of the way of any text and only about 1/2 inch in depth. Missing page corner as depicted, affecting the first front illustration page, affects a small amount of caption text, and the edges of 2 photos. Book generally lays flat and is readable and is fairly supple, Binding is decent and will permit reading. Fair condition, but not terrible for its age. 100+ illustrations. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
