An important and influential history of Japan, first published in two folio volumes in 1727-28 and not reprinted in full until this present edition. Kaempfer, a German physician, set out for Japan in May of 1690 in a professional capacity with the Dutch embassy. The ship in which he sailed touched at Siam, whose capital he visited, and in September he arrived at Nagasaki, the only Japanese port then open to foreigners. He remained there for the next two years, during which time he twice visited Tokyo, and engaged himself in an extensive study of Japanese history, geography, customs, and flora. He returned to Java and then Holland in 1693.
