Green cloth covers show moderate rubbing and wear at spine ends and corners; Paper is acidic and a little darkened and brittle; A few chips on edges of leaves; Title page is loose but laid in; Volume remains tight and complete. ; Presumed second state of first printing with first state appearing in maroon cloth. " This work is a history of Lawrence covering the period 1854 through the end of the Civil War in 1865. There are twenty-seven chapters. The author's portrait is the frontispiece with his facsimile signature below. A portrait of Amos Lawrence, for whom Lawrence, Kansas, is named, appears just after the table of contents and before the first chapter. There are other photographs of early settlers and illustrations relating to early Lawrence events. Cordley was born in England in 1829. His parents moved to the U. S. In 1850. Cordley came to Kansas in 1857. He remained in Kansas until 1875 when he returned to Michigan. In 1878 he returned to Kansas and spent six years as pastor of a church at Emporia.
