First published shortly after Ellwood's death in 1714, Ellwood's autobiography focuses on his experiences as a Quaker, his religious conversion, his education, and his relationship with famous Quaker leaders including William Penn and George Fox.He also discusses his imprisonment due to his beliefs, including his imprisonment between 1662 and 1664 after attending a Quaker meeting.
