Charnock, J. A. History of Marine Architecture. Including an enlarged and progressive View of the Nautical Regulations and Naval History, both Civil and Military, of all Nations, especially of Great Britain. London, R. Faulder (ao), 1800-1802. 1st. ed. 3 Vols. Large 4to. ca. 30 x 24 cm. 100,368; 496; 436 pp. Engraved frontispice, 99 aquatint and engraved plates, incl. some large folding, after Van de Velde and others. Beautiful 19th C. bindings: Uniform h.calf, spines richly gilt with 2 morocco letterpieces.

A very good copy of the first edition of "The most authoritative book on 18th century ship-building published in England" (Abbey), written by John Charnock (1756-1807), member of the Royal Navy and author of several highly esteemed works on marine history and ship-building. The present work offers a broad historic overview not only of English, French, Dutch shipbuilding, but includes also the Asian and the Pacific region.

Our copy with an albumen photograph (27.5 x 21cm.) of the "HMS Asia" mounted at blank page the end of vol. 3, and on its facing page a manuscript note on the history of that ship by its midshipman Thomas William Oliver, dated November 1892. The HMS Asia was an 84-gun ship of the Royal Navy, launched in 1824 at Bombay Dockyard. It was the British admiral Codrington's flagship at the naval Battle of Navarino during the Greek War of Independence (1821-1832); Active in the Syria campaign against Mehemet Ali, in the Eastern Mediterranean (1840-1841). In 1858 the ship was converted to serve as a guardship, and finally sold out of the navy in 1908.

Very good set, fine 19th C. bindings. Occasional sl. foxed and some offsetting of plates. - Abbey, Life 331; English Maritime Books 337; Cat. NHSM II, p.752. -

A working manuscript, with erasures, alterations and cancellations. Together with: A copy of the published full score of the movement, i.e., pp. 107-138, and a 1-1/2 page printed commentary by the composer discussing the background of the work and briefly describing the music: "I should say, however, that as I was working on the last movement, I found myself thinking as much about the fox as about the hunting hounds. This, coupled with the fact that I recently acquired a recording of background music from the old movie serials that I used to go to as a kid, probably accounts for the quite ungentlemanly, almost lurid quality of the chase music." 1905. Good +. Signed 3-page typescript of a agreement of sale between the American Baptist Publication Society and John Wanamaker. The American Baptist Publication Society sold to John Wanamaker the Crozier Building at 1420 and 1422 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, for $900,000. The Crozier Building was designed by Frank Miles Day & Brother and was added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places in 1980. American merchant John Wanamaker (1838-1922) had made $1.5 million in profits and interest from his stores in Philadelphia and New York in 1904, suggesting that his acquisition of the Crozier Building was an investment. The Crozier Building has continued to function as a successful office building to this day. In Good+ Condition: chipping at edges; loss of lower corner of first page, with minor loss of text; separating along some of the 2 horizontal creases in each page; signatures are clean and intact.

1873. Near Fine. 5 handwritten letters to William Ward, 1873-1879, regarding the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad, which existed from 1872 to 1885; it was succeeded by the Philadelphia Midland Railroad. William Ward was one of the organizers of the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad and in 1874 was the president and treasurer pro tem. Letters #1 and #2 (Sept. 5 and Dec. 5, 1873) are from Jos. H. McKeehan, an attorney in Philadelphia, who is writing about deliquent subscribers to the railroad. Letter #3 (Dec. 18, 1873) is from the Village Record, a newspaper in West Chester, Pa., with a copy of the advertisement that ran in the paper listing the dates that instalments from railroad subscribers were due in 1872.
