Sobre este artículo
Newnan, Georgia: S. W. Murray, Printer, 1899. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hardback book bound in blue cloth-covered boards with blind stamped decorations on front and back covers, gilt title on the spine. Book has rubs along the edges and spine with a small bump on upper front corner. The first two end pages are creased and there is underlining. There is a gift inscription to Charles Colcock Mallard from "Father" on the front end page. Charles Colcock Mallard was the son of Presbyterian Minister Rev. Robert Quarterman Mallard who was a minister of this church. A fascinating history of this church that fostered many other churches. Valuable history of early church work among the slaves by Rev. C. C. Jones, maternal grandfather of Charles Mallard, former owner of this book. Rev. Jones began in 1831 laboring in the 15th district, covering an area of 20 miles square, with 100 plantations of all sizes and about 4000 slaves of all ages. Rev. Jones rotated preaching at six "white" churches on the Sabbath and held plantation meetings at night during the week. He visited no plantations without permission of the owner and confined the meeting to the servants of the place. The book includes his very methodical way of working. It is important to note that colored people were never set off in a separate church organization, but were kept in connection with the whites. Comments on the positive outcome of evangelizing the slaves. Black and white photos of many of the early Presbyterian ministers with brief bios. A very interesting look at religion in this Georgia county in the 1800s. 283 pages..
