The first edition of this scarce work.An interesting work on Newenham Abbey, a ruined abbey near Axminster in Devon.Once an affluent Abbey, it suffered greatly during the Black Death of 1349, then further during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, being formally dissolved in 1539. By 1795, the Abbey was long in ruins, when John Swete visited to paint the ruins for his 'Picturesque Tours'.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and five plates.Collated, complete.Written by James Davidson, an antiquary and bibliographer.One page of adverts to the rear. In the original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with some light marks to the boards and spine. Rubbing to the joints and extremities. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste down. Front endpaper detaching a little to the head. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the occasional scattered spot. Frontispiece detaching a little to the head. Very Good

Where are We?
Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
