Red cloth with gilt lettering. Light abrasion in upper right corner of ffep where price has been erased, else internally fine. Dust jacket is stuck to rear board. Jacket's rear panel shows some damage; bit of wear to spine ends; not price clipped ($3.00). Volume has been placed in new archival mylar. 330 pages. The sequel to The History of Rome Hanks, Pennell's acclaimed first novel, published in 1944. In Nora Beckham he continues the story, describing the family's life in turn of the century small town Kansas, focusing on Rome's granddaughter Nora. The story is again narrated by Lee Harrington. Partly inspired by Pennell's own experiences and family life. Joseph Stanley Pennell (1903-1963) was born in Junction City, Kansas, and moved to Seaside, Oregon, in 1947. Although he had planned a third volume for the Hanks/Beckham series, he only went on to publish one additional book, a collection of his poems entitled Darksome House, issued in 1959.
